10 Tips on How to Protect Yourself

1. Park with caution

Many victims are attacked while heading or leaving their cars. You should aim to park in well-lit and busy spots. Avoid parking in empty areas. You should avoid parking next to any large vehicles like commercial vans. These large vehicles are easy to hide behind. After you park, make sure you lock your car and remember the location. If possible, try to park in parking lots with attendants. As an extra precaution, tell the attendant where you are parked as you return to your car. The parking attendant will know that something is wrong if you do not come through the pay window and will come looking for you.

2. Keep your key in your hand

When you return your car, you should have your keys in your hand. This will help you make a quick getaway if you see a suspicious person. You should consider adding a pepper spray to your keys. If someone tries to attack you, you can spray the pepper spray in their eyes and get away.

3. Look at the vehicles next to yours.

As you return to your vehicle, pay attention to parked vehicles near you. Is there any vehicle with the driver sitting with the engine on? If you notice any suspicious behavior, you may want to return to your car later.

4. Avoid helping strangers

If you are driving and see someone stranded on the side of the road, you should keep driving. Do not pull over. This could be a trap. Instead, call the highway patrol or police. The authorities can help the stranger. There is no need to endanger yourself.

5. Do not pullover for an unmarked police car

If an unmarked car tries to pull you over, call 911. Ask for the local police. The local police should be able to confirm whether the unmarked car is really a police officer. If you are still unsure, pull over to a well-lit and populated area. Do not roll down the window. Uniforms and badges can be easily procured. You should only roll down the window, if the police officer shows his or official identification card.
